Because too much sunlight can be harmful to the eye, many women wear sunglasses. Many companies have jumped on the band wagon and a big market around womens sunglasses has opened up. Women use sunglasses to help protect and shield their eyes from the sun and it's harmful rays, and some sunglasses also act as a visual aid for women with eye problems.
Because celebrities were wearing sunglasses to help hide their identies, many companies took advantage of this and sold high value sunglasses to them, as well as sponsorships for them to promote different sunglasses. Sunglasses became popular in the 90's when celebrities started to wear them to help protect their identies and help them hide from fans while in public places.
